Devils, Damned, and Don't Mess With No Golddigger

Joe's good news of Ken Russell's The Devils coming to DVD may not be happening after all. Warner exec Ronnee Sass (alias?) says the announcement was "a mistake."

But there is still some good news. Click here to read all about a collection of Russell's early BBC docs making their way to DVD, including that controversial Dance of the Seven Veils.

In addition, the other good news from Joe saying Lionsgate will release six of Luis Bunuel's Mexican films, most notably Los Olvidados, may have changed as well. According to a source who's situated deep inside the legal battle for the rights to these Bunuel films, Televisa still has not proven in court that they own these films. Expect this release to be canceled. And I'm all for that as well. Lionsgate's Studio Canal department did good on its Luis Bunuel set last year, but their cramming as many Mexican films onto DVD at once, sneaking them over the border (I'll stop there)... I'm sorry, but if you're going to treat them like this then you don't deserve to own them. At least Facets, in a state of ecstasy while releasing their Bunuels, blew their load on Susana's face.

Also, a real brick wall of an announcement from Europe's Masters of Cinema label (courtesy criterionforum.org):

Later in 2008, in addition to releasing previously announced titles (including our SILENT LUBITSCH box set, PHANTOM, VAMPYR, and MAD DETECTIVE), we shall also be releasing previously unannounced MoC titles made in the years:

1924, 1931, 1932, 1963, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1969, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1976, 1978, 1989, 1992, 1994, 1997, 1997, 1998, 2004.

by directors whose surnames begin with:

A, D, F, G, J, L, M, M, P, R, T, V (only two of which have films in the MoC Series already).

-- and there's more to come...

Your guess is as good as mine.

R + 1972 = Out 1: Spectre
R + 2004 = Meet the Fockers

And finally, because it's still Jacques Rivette's birthday party at Filmbo's Chick Magnet, here again (as requested) is Kanye West protesting the Criterion/Rivette scandal.

Yeah, well, it's a "mistake" that it's taken them so long to put this title out.
